Equipment Loans

Your Disability Adviser may recommend that you borrow a laptop or recording device from the library.

The loan period will be 4 weeks. Fines on overdue equipment are charged at the rate of 10 pound per day.

You are responsible for the equipment while it is in your possession and you are therefore liable to contribute to the cost of repair or replacement if it is lost or damaged.

There is a £5 fine on overdue, lost or damaged equipment.

Assistive Technology on Site and Free Study Tools

Assistive Technology available within USW libraries includes computers with specialised software and workspaces with height adjustable desks.

Identified computers have Supernova (screen-reader) software. For the locations of these computers and height adjustable desks visit Library Services

All open access computers have Inspiration (mind-mapping) software available from the desktop.



SensusAccess provides Inclusion Technology which allows students and staff to automatically convert documents into a range of alternate media.



Screen reader and screen mangifier. Available on a number of identified computers within the Library.



Available for USW staff to utilise to create inclusive learning materials such as video presentations and video recordings of lectures.

Blackboard Ally

Look for the Blackboard Ally icon next to your course content in Blackboard to access documents in a range of alternate formats.


RNIB Bookshare

The RNIB Bookshare facility provides access to texts in accessible formats for students with visual impairments or print disabilities. If you require access to this service please contact the Disability Service to discuss setting up membership to our account.

A free web-app that allows you to easily create, save, share, and embed mind maps, quizzes, flashcards, and notes. Plus, the service includes a study planner to help you stay organised and on top of your classes.



An advanced proof-reading tool that checks for spelling, homophones and grammar errors in your writing and looks at the context of your writing to achieve a very high correction success rate. Ginger also features text-to-speech so you can listen back to your work.

Basic suite of Georgie Phone software allows you to use the clear on-screen keyboard or your own voice to: make calls, manage your contacts, compose, send and receive text messages, hear the current time and date, get immediate assistance and set your phone preferences.

App available from £0.99 on android. Other Apps include: Georgie Reminders, Georgie Dictation etc


Window Eyes

A screen reading application for the blind or visually impaired that can convert components of Windows operating system into speech. You can download a free license if you have Office 2010 or later
